Both of Jamesville-DeWitt’s cross country teams took full advantage of being at home during last Saturday’s Section III Class A championship meets. Covering the familiar trails of Jamesville Beach Park, the girls Red Rams went first, beating eight other opponents in Class A with 29 points, exactly half the total of Whitesboro, who was second with 58 points. Junior Ameena Dye led J-D’s winning effort, claiming second place in 20 minutes, 40.3 seconds, just ahead of senior teammate Eileen Cody, who took third place in 20:54.5 as Whitesboro’s Katie Day (20:21.9) won the race. The next wave of Rams began with senior Grace Bradshaw, taking eighth place in 22:28.4, with junior Rebecca Bergman ninth in 22:29.3 and junior Paige Morrow 10th (22:30.2) to round out the scoring column. Freshman Hannah Caldwell was 12th (22:46.3) and Amber Blom 21st in 23:21.1. Though East Syracuse-Minoa was fifth in the team standings, Meghan Visser gave the Spartans a boost by finishing fourth, in 21:13.9, and qualifying for the state meet to be held this Saturday at SUNY-Plattsburgh. Later on, the boys Class A race turned into a duel between J-D and ESM, but the Red Rams prevailed here, too, earning 33 points to the Spartans’ 57. Dan Frank would take over the individual race, the junior gradually pulling away from Auburn’s Pat Lattimore to get first place. Frank finished in 17 minutes, 10.5 seconds, with Lattmore (17:27.4) nearly 17 seconds behind. Senior Jacob Gorke stepped up for J-D as he ran to fourth place in 17:46.5, while fellow senior Eamon Kissane claimed seventh place in 18:08 flat. Two more seniors rounded out the scoring as Tyler Petersen took 10th place (18:16.2) and Bumkuth Jiak was 11th, in 18:17.8. ESM kept up as much as it could — and by doing so, had two runners qualify for the state meet. Senior Matt Lyons was third, in 17:40.6, easily reaching the state meet, while Craig Andrianos (18:11.5) edged out fellow senior Dylan Courbat (18:13.0) for the last state berth. Senior Andrew Troast was 12th in 18:23.2. Louis Ferrone was 25th, in 19:11.5, two spots behind J-D freshman Jack Healy. Over in Class C, the CBA girls team claimed third place, with 86 points, behind Tully (41 points) and Sauquoit Valley (65 points). Freshman Katie Brislin was fifth, in 20:39.3, qualifying for the state meet. Corey Hucko was 14th (21:30.8), while Michaela Gildemeyer took 19th place (21:48.2), Rachel Zajdel was 24th (22:06.3) and Maire Kate McGlynn was 27th in 22:15.6. CBA’s boys team was fifth in a 15-team Class C field with 158 points. By finishing seventh in a time of 17:06.2, Tom Voorheis qualified for the state meet as the last of five individuals from outside team champion Holland Patent. Elsewhere for the Brothers, Brendan Smith landed in 22nd place, in 18:00.2, with Matt Giannino 31st (18:27.4) and Jack Lenkiewicz 42nd in 18:58.4.
