By making one more goal in a tense shoot-out, the Bishop Grimes boys soccer team put an end to Fabius-Pompey’s Section III Class C championship reign. At the same time, the no. 5 seed Cobras’ win over the no. 4 seed Falcons in Saturday’s Class C quarterfinals leaves Grimes two wins from what would be a first-ever sectional soccer title for the school, male or female. Having played F-P twice in the regular season, the Cobras did not show any fear. That helped guide Grimes through a 0-0 first half as both teams adjusted to windy conditions. A second-half exchanged followed. David Firenze scored for Grimes, with Patrick Magunga getting the assist, but Jake Mir answered for F-P, and the two sides stayed even. Through a pair of 15-minute sudden-death overtime periods, it remained 1-1, forcing the two sides to go to penalty kicks, five for each side, the most conversions prevailing. Most of the shots went in — but twice, Grimes goalie Matt Viel, who had 10 saves, forced F-P to miss, and that was enough to help the Cobras prevail 4-3 and advance to a Class C semifinal against top seed Frankfort-Schuyler. On a wet, muddy field for last Wednesday’s opening round, the no. 5 seed Cobras were quite impressive against no. 12 seed Mohawk, doing most of the damage in the early going to beat the Mohicans 4-0. Led by Nick Quigley, Grimes raced to a 3-0 halftime edge, not letting Mohawk get any notion that it would get into the contest. All told, Quigley had two goals and one assist, with Ryan Gakeler and Christian Freeman also scoring and Magunga earning two assists. Defensively, the Cobras limited Mohawk to just two shots. The Bishop Grimes girls team had to face no. 2 seed Tully in the Class C-2 quarterfinals on Thursday, and saw it season end with a 2-0 loss to the Black Knights. More than anyone else, Jessica Riggall proved to be the Cobras’ bane, as she scored one goal for Tully and assisted on the other, by Jenna Johnson. This was part of an all-out Black Knights attack that kept Grimes on the defensive throughout the contest. Only the superb work of goalie Ashley Morgan, who finished with 22 saves, kept things close. The Cobras finished with a record of 6-10-2.
