Again assuming local supremacy, the Vernon Verona Sherrill field hockey team went out on Thursday and fought off a tough challenge from Oneida, coming from behind in the second half to beat the Indians 2-1. By doing so, the Red Devils gave long-time head coach Wendy Seifred her 350th career victory and also improved the team’s overall record to 11-2, 9-1 in the Tri-Valley League. In a game pushed back 24 hours, the two teams avoided Wednesday’s wild and windy conditions, and the outcome was in doubt all the way through. Despite being on the defensive for much of the first half, Oneida still seized a 1-0 lead in the first half when Katie Strong scored off a feed from Kissandra Blasier. It remained that way until the second half, thanks to the hot play of Indians goalie Taylor Youngkrans, who had 17 saves. Youngkrans couldn’t keep everything out, though, as VVS finally broke through in the second half. Mary Schilling and Emily Fewer both hit on unassisted goals, and the Red Devils’ defense made sure that slim lead got protected. Just before facing Oneida, the Red Devils got a similar scare last Monday against New Hartford and won by a similar 2-1 margin over the Spartans. New Hartford, who hadn’t yet won a Tri-Valley League game this fall, surged in front when Andrea Keady scored in the first half off Katie Cadeaux’s pass, and the Red Devils trailed 1-0 at the break. Sensing the trouble, VVS took over in the late stages, as Ashley Palmer and Briana Roscoe both converted unassisted goals to save matters — just as it would need to do against Oneida.
