Few Onondaga High School League opponents had made the Cazenovia field hockey team sweat too much during the course of the 2009 season. Weedsport was an exception, though, and proved so again on a sunny Tuesday afternoon where the visiting Lakers needed every bit of its talent and patience to beat the Warriors 1-0 and improve its record to 11-0-1. Cazenovia arrived with all kinds of confidence, having conquered the Rome Free Academy Tournament on Oct. 3-4 by surviving a penalty shoot-out with Camden and beating RFA 3-1 in the finals. Having already beaten Weedsport once on Sept. 15 at Burton Street, the Lakers knew what kind of challenge the Warriors posed. Yet it still had to grind through a 0-0 first half in the rematch, despite taking a majority of the shots. Every time Cazenovia pushed in the early going, Weedsport goalie Gabriella Barrigar would make a big stop, as she would eventually earn 13 saves on the afternoon. Finally, though, the Lakers broke through in the second half. Off a feed from Tori Widrick, Belle Hoagland sent a low shot past Barrigar into the box for the game’s only goal. An airtight defense, led by Emily Mastrapaolo (four saves), helped preserve that slim margin. Cazenovia is back at Burton Street Friday to face Homer, looking to extend its unbeaten streak to 13.
