In all kinds of ways, three Syracuse city high school football teams found their way to the win column on the fourth weekend of the regular season. Corcoran lit up the scoreboard to beat Fayetteville-Manlius 54-37, while Henninger required a last-minute defensive stand to hold off West Genesee 20-14. Fowler went to Mexico and beat the Tigers 14-6 as Nottingham fell to Jamesville-DeWitt 14-6. Staying in a tie for first place in the Class AA-2 division with Auburn, Corcoran went through a 20-20 first quarter at F-M, erasing an early 6-0 deficit when Tyquan Mahon returned the ensuing kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown. Chao Porch and Shakem Buckmon also scored for the Cougars in that opening period, but despite Jerry Adams going 38 yards for a TD in the second quarter, Corcoran trailed the winless Hornets 27-26 at halftime. The Cougars went ahead for good in the third quarter, Tyshawn Golden and Travon Burke both scoring on short runs to make it 40-30. F-M closed to 40-37 in the fourth quarter, but Corcoran used a long drive late in the game to put it away, Buckmon scoring on a one-yard run with a minute left. Carlton Mormon then returned a fumbled kickoff 30 yards for the final TD. Henninger needed an entire game to fend off West Genesee in the first meeting between the two sides since last year’s Class AA final in the Carrier Dome, won by the Black Knights. Even when quarterback Shawn Bryant left the game early with a shoulder injury, Henninger kept its poise. Bryant’s replacement, Brandon Hanks, threw a 10-yard TD pass to Cole King for the only points of the first half. Up 6-0 at the break, Henninger would see Hanks find King again from 15 yards out in the third quarter. And Reggie Robinson, who set a career mark with 246 rushing yards, broke free for a 50-yard TD run in the fourth quarter to make it 20-6. Still, WG wouldn’t go away. Connor Zeman threw a 65-yard scoring pass to Josh Phillips with 8:30 to play, and as time wound down Zeman moved the Wildcats to Henninger’s 10-yard line, with a good chance to tie or win it. Staring at a third consecutive defeat, an 0-2 league mark and trouble when it came to Class AA playoff qualification, Henninger’s defense made a huge stand, forcing incomplete passes and a turnover on downs that ended it. Down in Class A, Fowler survived its road trip to Mexico by racing to a 14-0 halftime lead, then withstanding the Tigers’ late surge. Kelvin Amparo hit Josh Cruz on a 38-yard TD pass in the first quarter, putting the Falcons up 6-0. Dion Dixie stepped up in the second period, scoring on an eight-yard run and catching a two-point pass from Amparo. Mexico closed the gap to eight in the third quarter when Jimmy Loomis scored on a one-yard run, but the Falcons’ defense blanked the Tigers the rest of the way as the team improved to 2-2 on the season. A night earlier, Nottingham fell to 1-3 because it could not get anything against J-D’s stingy defense until the fourth quarter. Red Rams running back Jailaan Kinsey had 122 yards on 22 carries, and caught a 12-yard TD pass from Demetrius Mitchell in the second quarter as the Rams claimed a 14-0 lead. Antron Irby’s 14-yard scoring run late in regulation put the Bulldogs within reach, but it could not put together another drive. Each of the city’s teams will play on Friday. Nottingham is home to face Cortland, while Fowler tries to slow down 4-0 Fulton. Henninger takes its own trip to F-M as Corcoran meets Utica Proctor.
