After Vernon Verona Sherrill beat Oneida head-to-head in field hockey on Sept. 17, the two sides went on separate paths — and the Red Devils kept going up. VVS survived a scare from winless Clinton Tuesday afternoon, fighting past the Warriors in a 1-0 decision. Neither side scored in the first half, though the Red Devils dominated the flow of play. Clinton, thanks to goalie Rachel Moccaldi (15 saves), was staying close. Only in the second half did VVS break through, as Mary Schilling broke free and pushed a shot past Moccaldi for an unassisted goal, the only one of the day. Meanwhile, Oneida suffered a 3-1 loss to Holland Patent. Despite Morgan Benier’s goal (assisted by Kassandra Blaiser) and 19 saves from Taylor Youngkrans, the Indians could not keep up with the Golden Knights. Melissa Quintanilla led HP with one goal and one assist. On Thursday, Oneida took its shot at Clinton and finally got its first win of the season, beating the Warriors by the same 1-0 margin as VVS just did. Mycale Kimball’s first-half goal held up the rest of the afternoon as Oneida’s defense did a superb job, holding Clinton to just three shots, all of which Youngkrans stopped. VVS, meanwhile, faced Camden in a first-place Tri-Valley League showdown, and could not stop the Blue Devils in a 2-1 defeat. Trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Red Devils got on the board when Jade Vanderhoof scored, unassisted, in the late stages. Still, Camden won on goals by Kelcy Forbragd and Holly VanDresar, with goalie Heidi Deppmeyer stopping 10 of the 11 shots she faced. VVS goalie Teresa Moats had seven saves. VVS goes to Whitesboro on Wednesday, then returns home Friday to meet Holland Patent. Oneida hosts Camden Friday after a Monday trip to New Hartford.
