In what is another clear sign of the work that lies ahead, the Skaneateles girls country team took a rare defeat within an OHSL Liberty division it has dominated over the years. Even more telling was the fact that the Lakers lost Wednesday to its neighbor and rival, Marcellus, in a 23-32 decision, while also beating Solvay 15-48 to salvage a split. Madeline Adams led Skaneateles, finishing second in 22 minutes, 37 seconds, behind the Mustangs’ Rachel Garn, who won in 21:59. In all, Marcellus took three of the top four spots before Blair Gage claimed fifth place (23:41) and Courtney Pitman took sixth in 24:50. The Mustangs’ fourth and fifth runners hit the line before Ellis Van Slyke (25:19) and Shannon Byrne (25:31) closed out the Skaneateles scoring. Calvin Davis won the boys race, his time of 18:17 a full 15 seconds clear of Solvay’s Matt Fedrizzi. But Marcellus (20-43) and Solvay (21-39) both beat the short-handed Lakers, as the Mustangs ran together in the third through ninth spots.
