As the weather turned wet on Wednesday, the Christian Brothers Academy and Jamesville-DeWitt cross country teams both earned valuable league wins. The Brothers began work in the OHSL Liberty division with a sweep of Westhill and Phoenix, the girls prevailing over the Warriors 21-37 and the Firebirds 18-45. Freshman Katie Brislin, one of the state’s top-ranked Class C runners, finished on top in a time of 19 minute, 35 seconds, well clear of teammate Rachel Zajdel, who was second in 20:54. Michaela Gildemeyer worked her way to fifth place, in 21:19, with Ellen Voorheis seventh in 22:18. Ashley Lettney (22:49) and Julia Quigley (22:50) were ninth and 10th, respectively. Meanwhile, the CBA boys team knocked off Westhill 21-34 and ripped Phoenix 15-50, even though the Warriors’ Kevin Zych claimed individual honors with a time of 16:51. Tom Voorheis led the Brothers, finishing second in 17:30, one second ahead of Matt Giannino as Brendan Smith (17:59) and Jack Lienkiewicz (18:35) rounded out the top five. Steve Anderson finished seventh in 18:53. J-D kept itself undefeated in the OHSL Freedom division, going to Mexico and beating the Tigers 21-38 on the boys side and 21-40 in the girls race. Claiming boys individual honors for the Red Rams, Bumkoth Jiak won in 17 minutes, 17 seconds, with the Tigers’ Tyler Pettit (17:42) in second place. Dan Driscoll finished third, in 17:50, with Max Smith (17:55) in fourth. Dan Frank (18:01) and Eamon Kissane (18:13) were sixth and seventh, respectively, as Jack Healy was ninth in 18:41 and Tyler Petersen (18:59) was 10th. The girls Red Rams swept each of the top five spots after Mexico’s Tia Bullard won the individual race in 20 minutes flat. Eileen Cody was second, in 21:13, as Ameena Dye took third (22:10), Rebecca Bergman fourth (22:51) and Emily Pinkes fifth in 23:10. Grace Bradshaw, in a seventh-place time of 23:39, led the next pack that included Avery Share (23:49), Amber Blom (24:03) and Rebecca Doss (24:09).
