On consecutive nights, the Baldwinsville boys and soccer teams both confronted threats to their Section III Class AA throne at Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium, and only one would prevail. With big plays from Katie Gildemeyer, the girls Bees held off Liverpool 1-0, the same score by which B’ville had won over the Warriors in last year’s AA semifinals. A night earlier, B’ville’s boys team took a 3-2 defeat to Fayetteville-Manlius, who moved its mark to a perfect 7-0. Given their proximity and intimate knowledge of each other, it made sense that the B’ville and Liverpool girls would slog through a first half with just 10 total shots, the defenses seizing full control. Late in the half, though, the Bees made a serious push, and when Liverpool goalkeeper Noel Peck committed a foul inside the 18-yard box, a penalty kick was called. Gildemeyer, normally a defender, took the shot, and fired it past Peck, giving the Bees a one-goal margin. B’ville would spend the rest of the night clinging to that lead, while making a fair series of attacks, each of which Liverpool would fend off. As the second half wore on, the Warriors’ chances grew. And the best shot came in the 65th minute, when Kim Murphy flew open in the middle and drove toward the net. Before Murphy could take a shot, though, Gildemeyer ran her down and cleared the ball away. Goalie Maggie Monnat also had to make a save 20 yards out of the net with 10:30 left, and she watched as close-up headers flew wide twice in the closing minutes. All this followed a Monday-night drama where the B’ville boys team, reeling from a surprising 1-0 loss to Utica Proctor on Sept. 18, made two comebacks against F-M, but still tasted another defeat. Halie Marr put the Hornets in front just 7:08 into the game, but the Bees forced a two-on-one break in the 20th minute and pulled even, 1-1, Adam Lauko scoring off a feed from Ben Ramin. Again, F-M took the lead, 2-1, when Tyler Forbes converted off a turnover in the 27th minute. Again, B’ville tied it, 2-2, Lauko scoring from the right side seven minutes into the second half. So it remained, both sides unable to get in front, until the 10-minute mark. F-M drew a corner kick, and Mike Kutzer’s cross flew long to the left side, where Forbes headed it inside the post and past Andrew Coughlin. That would prove to be the game-winner. Both B’ville teams will face Cicero-North Syracuse on Thursday – the boys at home, the girls at Archie Hall Stadium, located behind North Syracuse Junior High School.
