Fuming from an 0-3 start, the Cazenovia boys soccer team got into the win column In a decisive manner. The Lakers hosted Phoenix last Monday at the Fenner Street complex and put together a 3-0 shutout of the Firebirds. Even this win took a lot of effort, though, as Phoenix, led by goalie Nick Padula (who finished with nine saves), played Cazenovia to a 0-0 first-half draw. But the Lakers took charge in the second half, and Crozer Connor set the tone, getting one goal and assisting on the other two scoring plays. Curtis Matteson and Mark Kelish earned the other goals. Mason Powell stopped all five shots he faced. It turned around again, though, when Cazenovia met defending Section III Class B champion Skaneateles on Thursday and lost to those other Lakers by that same 3-0 margin. Even though Cazenovia had a fair share of chances, nothing got past the Skaneateles defense, as goalie Jake Bird made 10 saves. Meanwhile, Powell had a solid showing, too, with 15 saves, but could not keep everything out as Kyle Baier, Zach Brownlee and Jared Amory put in the Skaneateles goals. Cazenovia (1-4) was back home Monday to face Marcellus before going to Solvay Thursday for the first of three consecutive road games.
