In advance of a meeting Thursday night, both the Marcellus and Solvay girls soccer teams endured overtime battles on Tuesday, with varying results. The Mustangs fought past Dryden (Section IV) 2-1, while the Bearcats took its first loss of the season to Cazenovia 4-3. In the Mustangs’ meeting with Dryden, neither side could score for much of regulation, though Marcellus dominated the flow of play and had most of the chances to go in front. Finally, with 13:46 left in regulation, Kathryn Busa gave the Mustangs a 1-0 lead with a goal assisted by Lizzy Dean. Dryden didn’t back away, though, tying the game at 1-1 with less than six minutes left. So they went to overtime. Just at the end of the first 10-minute OT period, Becca Eddy flashed open and, off another feed from Busa, put in what proved to be the game-winner. As this was going on, Solvay was on the brink of a huge road win at the Fenner Street Complex before Cazenovia roared back. Solvay broke out to a 2-0 halftime lead, and were it not for Laker goalie Jamie Enders (13 saves), it might have turned more lopsided. Instead, Cazenovia regrouped, then used a pair of second-half goals to pull even. During the first OT, Solvay scored again — but so did Cazenovia. Only in the second OT, when Katie Kleine registered her second goal, did the Lakers go in front for good. Mickenzie Moore, Alexis Bandera and Amanda Bigness each earned goals on the Bearcats’ side, with goalie Chelsea Root getting six saves.
