Flush with high expectations, the Baldwinsville cross country teams made a fine opening statement at Saturday’s Vernon Verona Sherrill Invitational. Running on the same course where the 2010 Section III and 2011 state championship meets will take place, the Bees won the boys “White” division, while the girls took second place. B’ville, with four of the top six finishers on the individual side, beat nine other foes in the White division at VVS, earning 32 points, well clear of Jamesville-DeWitt, who was second with 59 points, with Marcellus (60 points) in third. Junior Shaun Thompson led the way, claiming second place in 16 minutes, 53.1 seconds, half a second behind Jesse Garn (Marcellus), who won in 16:52.6. Nate McCabe pushed his way to fourth place, in 16:57.5, leading a pack of Bees that included Adam Pacheck, who took fifth place (16:59.1), and Chris Wicks, who was sixth in 17:22.7. Ethan Pacheck, in 15th place (18:03.3), rounded out the scoring, with Andy Fleming 21st (18:39.8) and Charles Parker 22nd, in 18:47.2. In the girls White division at VVS, B’ville had 105 points, beating everyone in the 10-team field except Tully, who won with 50 points. Kristina Sprague ran her way to ninth place in a clocking of 21:32.5. Ashley Shaheen finished 16th (22:05.1), while Kristen Biederman took 25th place in 22:35.9. Erika Wilcox was 28th (22:57.6) as Mallory Warner, in 32nd place (23:01.2), rounded out the scoring. B’ville opens its CNY Counties League National division schedule Wednesday, at Henninger, and will compete Saturday in the Chittenango Invitational at Jamesville Beach State Park, where the Section III championships will take place on Nov. 7.
