The odds of two soccer games, in two separate locales close to each other, on consecutive nights, being halted for reasons of electricity are quite long – especially when the weather is good. Yet that’s exactly what happened this week, when Marcellus and Westhill both hosted important contests that, alas, never got to finish. It all began Tuesday night, when Marcellus hosted its biggest rival, Skaneateles, in what many believed was a showdown of the top two teams in the Section III Class B ranks. They have won the last two sectional titles – the Mustangs in 2007, the Lakers in 2008. Cal Filtch put Marcellus ahead 1-0 with a goal barely three minutes into the game. Skaneateles answered midway through the half when Zach Brownlee poked home the rebound after Ryan Farrell’s corner kick hit the right post. They would stay 1-1 into the second half, as the defenses tightened up and both sides squandered great chances to break the tie. Then, in the 57th minute, the light towers at Marcellus flickered, then gradually went off. It didn’t affect anything else in the area (including the school), but both teams still left the field. Even though some of the bulbs were restored, they still flickered, so Marcellus officials decided to stop the game and resume it at a later date. Amazingly, less than 24 hours later, a similar situation, at a similar time of the game, arose when the Westhill girls soccer team hosted Jordan-Elbridge. With Westhill leading 2-0 in the 53rd minute, a transformer inside Westhill High School blew up, and all the lights at the school went out – including those illuminating the Warriors’ soccer/football field. Again, the decision was made to stop the game, though it’s uncertain at the moment whether Westhill and J-E will resume it. Westhill did have a boys soccer home game scheduled for Thursday night against Cazenovia, while Marcellus would host boys games against Manlius-Pebble Hill. Tests done on Wednesday indicated that the lights were working again.
