For the second consecutive season, the Liverpool football team will be playing “home” games far from its campus. Only this time, they’re going to a grand stage — the Carrier Dome, traditional site in November of both the Section III finals and state championship games Each of the Warriors’ four scheduled home dates will be in the Dome, starting Sept. 5 when it plays Fayetteville-Manlius as part of the annual Kickoff Classic. Following that, Liverpool will go to the Dome Sept. 18 to face Rome Free Academy, Oct. 2 to meet Central Square and Oct. 9 for game with Christian Brothers Academy. Since 2007, when Liverpool’s artificial turf home field was condemned for safety reasons, teams in the fall and spring sports have been forced into contingency plans. In lacrosse, boys teams play on the soccer fields, while girls varsity games were moved to Solvay’s Earl Hadley Stadium. The field hockey Warriors played all its 2008 home games at Syracuse University’s Coyne Field on its way to a Section III title. Last fall, the football Warriors moved “home” games to Solvay and Central Square, yet still made it to the Class AA semifinals before falling to West Genesee — just as it did in 2007. If all goes as planned, Liverpool’s new turf field will be ready for the 2010 season.
