Hank Fengler, of North Syracuse, was one of four that were inducted into Onondaga Community College’s Hall of Fame during the College’s annual Athletics Awards Banquet on June 6. Fengler played a crucial role in launching, reviving, and rebuilding the college’s athletics program. He played in OCC’s first men’s basketball game, scoring the first two points in the history of the program. Additionally, Fengler coached OCC’s basketball team from 1977 to 1983 and 1987 to 1991, posting a 139-109 overall record. He stands first in number of years coached (10) and second in overall games coached (248). As OCC’s director of athletics from 1983 to 1987, he launched the College’s lacrosse program and heavily supported other teams as they captured three regional championships during his tenure. Fengler later returned as coach of the basketball team for a second stint, from 1987 to 1991. He led the team to back-to-back Mid-State Athletic Conference basketball championships in 1989 and 1990. The latter team still owns the best single-season record in school history at 24-5. Along with publishing more than a dozen articles and two books, Fengler taught history at Cicero-North Syracuse High School from 1969-2003, also coaching the CNS varsity basketball team during that time. Today, Fengler remains involved with the OCC department of education. He also maintains an active role with Coaches vs. Cancer and the American Cancer Society.
