Each of the Cicero-North Syracuse and Liverpool boys track and field teams had winning efforts during last Saturday’s Section III state qualifying meet at Bragman Stadium. And it allowed them to return to CNS this Friday and Saturday to vie for medals at the state championship meet. It marks the third time CNS has hosted this prestigious event. For the Northstars, Bryan Buchanan beat the field in the 3,200-meter run. He posted a time of nine minutes, 43.48 seconds, beating Baldwinsville’s Adam Pacheck by 7.44 seconds. Alex Neumeister took his turn in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing in 57.07 seconds to hold off Oneida’s Jeff Barres (57.75 seconds) for the top spot. Dillon McKee also won, in the pole vault, the only Division I (large school) competitor to clear 11 feet 6 inches. To cuminate this winning effort, Jake Whritenour, Zach Brown, Brandon Marlow and Mike Fiume got together and, in the 4×400 relay, won in a time of 3:26.24, more than six seconds ahead of runner-up Oswego (3:32.70). Liverpool had three wins of its own, starting in the 4×800, where its time of 7:45.91 is the best in the state this spring. Zavon Watkins, Chris Clemons, Colin Savage and Alex Wilke didn’t need to go that fast this time, but they cruised to first place in 8:04.73, more than seven seconds clear of runner-up West Genesee. On his own, Savage took charge of the 800-meter run, earning his place in the state meet by running the half mile in 1:55.81 to beat Jamesville-DeWitt Star Bumkuth Jiak (1:56.82). Watkins, in third place (1:59.40), also broke the two-minute mark, with Wilke fifth in 2:01.70. Corey Bundrage again prevailed in the 110-meter high hurdles, crossing the line in 15.08 seconds as teammate Joe Spernyak finished third in 15.71 seconds. Nick Hull was fourth in the 3,200 in 10:04.99 and Mychal Ostuni ninth in the 3,000 steeplechase. Elsewhere for CNS, Eric Munoz took fifth place in the triple jump with 41 feet 11 3/4 inches. Jared Thomson was fifth in the discus (120 feet 11 inches) and sixth in the shot put, tossing it 45 feet 6 1/2 inches. Keenan Williams was eighth in the 110-meter high hurdles and Dan Fritz 10th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
