Even as it knocked off big-name foes, the Baldwinsville softball team has hung in the shadows for much of the 2009 season, waiting for its chance to emerge into the light. Now, in the Section III Class AA playoffs, the Bees are poised to break out, even if it requires beating all of the top seeds and well-established programs to reach its ultimate goal of a banner. From its no. 6 seed, B’ville made its first big noise in last Friday’s Class AA quarterfinal, going east and conquering no. 3 seed Rome Free Academy in a 3-0 shutout. Up against a solid pitcher in the Black Knights’ Amelia Casalenuovo, the Bees poked across single runs in the first, fifth and seventh innings. Carley Nicoletti’s triple drove in a run, with Kristen Baldino doubling and earning an RBI. Meanwhile, pitcher Cassie Williams calmly worked her way through RFA’s lineup in a complete-game shutout, only allowing four hits, none of them for extra bases. B’ville now steps up to face no. 2 seed Liverpool in Wednesday’s AA semifinal at Hopkins Road Park. If the Bees can repeat a pair of regular-season wins over the Warriors, it will meet Cicero-North Syracuse or Oswego for the championship Saturday at the Gillette Road complex.
