In a rush of games at the end of the regular season, the Fayetteville-Manlius baseball team played three times on May 21 and 22, going 2-1 in that span. First, the Hornets wrapped up CNYCL American division play at Central Square, taking over in the middle stages to beat the Red Hawks 12-5. F-M lashed out for six runs in the top of the third inning against Central Square pitcher Dylan Catlin, then tacked on four runs in the fourth inning to make it 11-2. Ryan Godfrey smacked a home run, earning four RBIs as part of a 16-hit attack. Pat McClure doubled and also drove in four runs, while Mike Palermo, Jeremy Mapstone, Chris Quinn and Joey Hamel each had one RBI. Scott Miller pitched and got the win, as he and Pat Kellogg held the Red Hawks to two hits. Without any time to rest, the Hornets made the short drive to Gillette Field for the opening round of the John Ilacqua Jr. Memorial Tournament for its second game against Cicero-North Syracuse in as many days. As in the first meeting (a 6-4 defeat), the Hornets lost, this time by a 13-6 margin. Twice, F-M came back, using three-run rallies in the third and fifth innings to erase 2-0 and 5-3 deficits as Quinn, McClure and Ethan Braddock each got two RBIs. However, CNS had the last push, torching F-M for eight runs in the bottom of the sixth to decide it as Matt West finished with a home run and three RBIs. At least the Hornets had a chance — unlike Jamesville-DeWitt, who found itself on the wrong end of an 18-0 loss to Westhill in the other opening-round game as Warriors sophomore Jack Ganley threw a perfect game, retiring all 21 Red Rams batters he faced. F-M and J-D met in Saturday’s consolation game, and the Red Rams didn’t score until the seventh inning, taking a 5-3 loss to the Hornets. F-M closed the regular season at 11-8. As the no. 7 seed in the Class AA playoffs, F-M would host no. 10 seed Rome Free Academy in Tuesday’s opening round, the winner to face no. 2 seed CNS on Thursday. The title game is June 2 at Alliance Bank Stadium. Elsewhere, East Syracuse-Minoa got the no. 8 seed in Class A, hosting no. 9 seed Whitesboro on Tuesday, with the winner to get a shot Thursday at top seed CBA. Bishop Grimes’ late charge meant that it earned the no. 7 seed in Class C-2, needing to visit no. 2 seed West Canada Valley in Thursday’s quarterfinal round. Whoever wins that game draws Fabius-Pompey or Mohawk.
