Hungry for its first-ever championship, the Marcellus girls lacrosse team plunges into the Section III Class C playoffs. And the Mustangs do so with a great feeling after a final week of the regular season that included a long-awaited win over Skaneateles May 19 — and a fairly effective follow-up a few days later. Back on its home turf to face Cazenovia last Friday night, the Mustangs’ all-around effort proved superb, leading to a 16-10 victory over those other Lakers. Cazenovia, earlier in the week, had put an end to Westhill’s 14-game win streak — but had also lost to Jordan-Elbridge 18-17, and the Mustangs sensed an opportunity to further erode the Lakers’ confidence. To that end, Marcellus (14-4, 12-3 league) pushed the tempo in the first half and steadily worked its way to an 8-5 lead, getting contributions from several players. As the game wore on, the Mustangs’ defense never let Cazenovia’s top two scorers, Gabby Jaquith (four goals, one assist) and Kara Cannizzaro (three goals, two assists) put together a big spurt. That allowed Marcellus to double its margin in the second half, for it had plenty of offensive options, and they all did something on this night. Leea Sinay, with four goals, and Nora Barry, with three goals and two assists, led the way. Kate Gosson also found the net three times, adding an assist, while Stephanie O’Rourke and Meghan Connors matched each other with two goals and one assist. Kelly Welch and Erin Walter earned one goal apiece. Denise Johns added an assist.
