Westhill came within inches of winning last Tuesday night’s OHSL Liberty division boys track and field championship meet. This time, though, it was Skaneateles coming out on top, earning 109.5 points as the Warriors got 106 points and the host Marcellus Mustangs 104 points. Solvay, with 86.5 points, finished fourth, as Jordan-Elbridge (28 points) trailed the field. Westhill had Tom Fisher set a meet record in the discus, tossing it 145 feet 11 inches, while Tom Welch cleared 12 feet 3 inches and won the pole vault. Fisher also got third in the shot put, tossing it 44 feet 1 1/2 inches. On the oval, the Warriors’ Kevin Zych won the 3,200 in 9:48.65, beating CBA’s Tom Voorheis by more than four seconds as Chris Moore got second in the mile (4:26.07) behind Mustangs star Chris Stogsdill, who won that event, plus the 800 and 3,000 steeplechase. Vinny Savastano took second place to Stogsdill in the steeplechase (10:16.10) and was fifth in the 3,200. The Warriors were third in the 4×100 (46.89 seconds), 4×400 (3:37.81) and 4×800 (8:58.36) relays. Dymytry Mazuryk claimed second in the 400 hurdles in 58.61 seconds, just behind Pat Rooney (Skaneateles), who won in 58.08 seconds. Jeff Law was fifth in the long jump and triple jump, adding a sixth in the high jump. Solvay won the 4×100 relay as Tom Bradley, Anthony Liquori, Chris Hoffman and Jeremy Parker took a time of 46.62 seconds. Parker, Rich Salvagno, John Salvagno and Conor Halton got second in the 4×400 in 3:35.75. C.J. Brooks threw the shot put 47 feet 6 1/2 inches and won that event, with Bradley in fifth place as Brooks also took third (118 feet) in the discus behind Fisher. Jerry Santoferrara tied for second (10 feet 6 inches) in the pole vault, while Ed Buczikowski landed in fourth in the triple jump. Liquori ran to second in the 200-meter dash in 24.03 seconds, with Hoffman fifth. Liquori also got third place (53.58 seconds) in the 400 as Parker (50.70 seconds) got second place. Matt Fedrizzi ran to third place in the mile (4:29.29). J-E had its big moment when John Flynn, with 2,568 points, beat Westhill’s Bill Coons in the pentathlon. Mike Marrero was third in the steeplechase (10:40.58) as Greg Bader finished fourth in the mile in 4:43.99. Andrew Conlan, sixth in the 100, helped Nick Byrnes, Cody Griffin and Kyle Becker take fourth (47.03 seconds) in the 4×100.
