Once was not enough, and the Liverpool girls track and field team badly wanted to beat Cicero-North Syracuse again when the two sides reunited for last Wednesday’s CNY Counties League National division championship meet at Bragman Stadium. The Warriors got what it wanted, too, working hard to earn 162 points and edge past the Northstars, who took second with 153 points. Utica Proctor was third with 112 points. Going 1-2 in the 800-meter run, Miranda McConnell won in a time of 2:20.50 and Trina Bills finished second, in 2:22.57. Bills went on to get second in the 400 hurdles (1:08.31), while McConnell added a third in the 1,500-meter run in 4:55.62. Wanetta Rodney earned second in the 100 in 12.98 seconds, just behind Proctor’s Geannitta McLain (12.74 seconds). As for the 400-meter dash, Bills finished third, in 1:00.34, with Rachel Putman (1:02.01) in fourth place. Harmony Cross gained third place (16.17 seconds) and Nachez Brown fourth place (16.22 seconds) in the 100-meter high hurdles. Brigid Heenan ran to second in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 7:37.90 and was sixth in the 2,000 steeplechase. Connie Torres ran to fourth in the 200-meter dash (27.51 seconds), with Hannah Anthes fifth and Rodney sixth. In field events, Erika Salem and Chelsea Attaway went 1-2 in the pole vault, as Salem cleared 9 feet and Attaway cleared 8 feet 6 inches for the runner-up spot. Cara Scalisi was third in the triple jump, going 34 feet, as Armani Moore earned a third-place long jump of 16 feet 1 1/2 inches. Scalisi also contended in the high jump, clearing 4 feet 10 inches to finish fourth, just behind teammate Meagan Turner in third place. Harmony Cross was fourth (32 feet 2 inches) and Tatiana Gladney sixth in the shot put. Nikki Carfi, with 1,843 points, claimed third place in the pentathlon. Going to the relays, Liverpool took second in the 4×100 as Moore, Brown, Torres and Cara Scalisi finished in 50.68 seconds, just behind Utica Proctor (50.21 seconds). In the 4×400, Chrissy Scalisi, Skye Borasky, Rachel Putman and Anthes had a time of 4:08.68, just behind West Genesee (4:08.19) at the wire. Liverpool also got fourth in the 4×800. A day later, in the boys CNYCL National meet, the Warriors tied Proctor for fourth place, each with 79 points. Baldwinsville (150.5 points) held off CNS (145 points) for the top spot, avenging a May 6 regular-season defeat to the Northstars. Zavon Watkins, Chris Clemons, Alex Wilke and Colin Savage combined to win the 4×800 relay in a time of 8:17.42, beating B’ville by more than six seconds. Later, in the mile, Savage won in a time of 4:21.94, while Watkins earned third place in the 400-meter dash in 52.14 seconds. And in the 4×400 relay, Watkins, Savage, Clemons and Wilke came within inches of a win, only to have CNS beat them, 3:28.79 to 3:28.81. Corey Bundrage prevailed in the 110 high hurdles in 15.58 seconds, with Joe Spernyak (16.17 seconds) in fourth place. Justin Albro won the five-event pentathlon with 2,174 points, beating Jon Hingre (B’ville) by 132 points. Anthony Brais (10:02.43) and Nick Hull (10:12.42) were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 3,200-meter run. Jason Osborne threw the shot put 45 feet 5 3/4 inches, taking third place, while Brian Greene got sixth place in the discus. Joe Lona cleared 10 feet 6 inches for fourth place in the pole vault as Joe Alvarado (9 feet 6 inches) finished fifth. Mychal Ostuni was fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:59.12.
