In a rush of baseball games to close out the regular season, Fayetteville-Manlius and East Syracuse-Minoa met each other Tuesday afternoon, with the Hornets beating the Spartans by a score of 13-3. F-M, who had played well in recent weeks, jumped all over ESM pitcher Jake Curtis for five runs in the top of the first inning. A four-run third inning made it 9-2, and it never proved close again. Chris Quinn, Pat McClure and Dan Maloney all belted home runs on the Hornets’ behalf. Ben Whorall doubled and finished with three RBIs as Maloney, Quinn and Jeremy Mapstone each drove in two runs. Scott Miller also had an RBI. Though ESM’s James Russo drove in two runs and Billy Sullivan tripled, it was far from enough, as F-M pitcher Ryan Brown went most of the way and got the win. A day later, the Hornets confronted prime Class AA contender Auburn and made Senior Day quite memorable with two different comebacks to beat the Maroons 15-9. Auburn grabbed a 6-1 lead by the second inning, fueled by Steve Komanecky’s three-run home run in the top of the first. Gradually, pitcher Joe Sinopoli settled down and, by the end of the fourth inning, F-M had tied it, 7-7, with Mapstone and Whorall both driving in two runs. Komanecky’s two-run double in the top of the seventh pushed Auburn back ahead 9-7, but the Hornets made the last move, tagging Auburn for eight runs in the bottom of that frame. Hits by Mike Palermo and Mapstone tied it, and Ryan Godfrey’s pinch-hit single gave F-M a 10-9 lead. Ethan Braddock drew a bases-loaded walk, and Quinn, in his last regular-season home game, drilled a grand slam over the right-field fence to clinch it. As this was going on, ESM took a painful 10-9 loss to Cortland. Five runs in the first inning, plus a three-run third inning, had the Spartans ahead 8-1, and it was still 8-3 before the Purple Tigers shocked the home fans by scoring seven runs in the top of the seventh to win it. Pete Gigliotti, in defeat, had a triple and two RBIs, while Sullivan and Joe Greco also drove in two runs apiece. Chris Banaszek also drove in a run.
