Needing a lot of offense, the Chittenango baseball team fended off the challenge of Fulton in last Monday’s game, beating the Red Raiders 8-6. Each side scored three runs in the second inning. The Bears went in front by scoring twice in the top of the third, and built the margin to 6-3, but Fulton answered with runs in the fourth and fifth innings to force a 6-6 tie. Chittenango would have the last surge, though, getting two runs in the top of the sixth as Jeff Pierce, pitching in relief of Wes Burghardt and Shaun Skurpski, blanked the Red Raiders in the sixth and seventh innings to win it. Jake Bicknell doubled and drove in two runs on the Bears’ behalf. Burghardt, Mike Moon and Andrew Lampman each had one RBI, with Zach Boswell adding a double. A day later, at Jamesville-DeWitt, the Bears could not keep up with the Red Rams’ consistent production in a 10-4 defeat. It was actually tied, 3-3, before J-D used two runs in both the third and fourth innings to pull in front for good. Jeff Pierce took the loss, as Kevin Streeter saw an extended relief stint. Devin Christopher, Chris Green and Pat McGinnis each got one RBI. J-D teammates Jack Susman and John Sheedy each drove in two runs. The Bears would improve to 13-10 on Wednesday afternoon, beating Fowler by the same 10-4 margin by which it lost to J-D the day before. Never trailing, Chittenango had a 3-1 edge when, in the bottom of the fourth inning, it scored four times to break loose. All told, it scored in five consecutive innings and earned 15 hits on the day. Christopher had two doubles and a team-best two RBIs. Skurpski tripled in a run as Moon, Lampman, McGinnis and Bicknell earned one RBI apiece. Moon pitched most of the way, earning the win as Jon Stevens saw a relief stint.
