As it sped toward the start of the Section III Class B playoffs, the Canastota softball team continued to show why it would be a favorite to win it all. The Raiders wasted little time in last Monday’s game at Waterville, leading every moment of a 13-3 victory over the Indians to clinch the Center State Conference II regular-season title. Canastota got five runs in the first inning, which was enough for pitchers Liz McGinley and Jessica Patterelli, who combined to allow just three hits. Still, the Raiders used three runs in the fourth inning and four runs in the top of the fifth to get away. Patterelli smacked a home run and double, finishing with four RBIs, while Alicia Hibbard (two doubles), Lindsay McGinley and Jessica DeNova each drove in two runs. Andrea Underwood had an RBI, too. Now all the Raiders wanted to do was complete a perfect run through the CSC — which it did on Tuesday, rallying past Sauquoit Valley 15-5 to finish 20-1 on the regular season. That final score didn’t refelct Canastota’s early trouble, as the Warriors took a 4-0 first-inning lead. Canastota finally got on the board in the fourth inning, then turned its 4-1 deficit around in a hurry an inning later. Batting around, the Raiders roughed up Sauquoit for nine runs in the bottom of the fifth, then scored five times in the sixth inning, all because of a massive power surge. Hibbard and DeNova both struck for two home runs, each finishing with five RBIs. Patterelli also went deep on her way to three RBIs for the afternoon as Brianna Quaglia and Liz McGinley earned one RBI apiece. This followed the Raiders’ 8-2 win over Westmoreland, where it trailed 2-1 after two innings, but went in front with three runs in the third inning and scored four more times in the top of the fourth. Not only did Liz McGinley throw a complete game, she also piled up four RBIs. Patterelli and Hibbard drove in two runs apiece.
