A year full of frustration for the Marcellus girls lacrosse team against its archrivals from Skaneateles finally ended on Tuesday night. Right in front of the Lakers’ home fans, the Mustangs clawed in front, then stayed there down the stretch for a 12-10 victory. Going in, Marcellus had a 12-4 record, but one of those defeats had come to Skaneateles way back on March 30, a 13-11 decision that built upon its loss to those same Lakers in the 2008 Section III Class C final. As the season went on, Skaneateles struggled, falling to 9-7, well below what it had done in years past. Still, the Lakers had the bragging rights on Marcellus, something the Mustangs were desperate to turn around. They would play a game similar to the first one, in that neither team would break out to a big lead. Only this time, Marcellus would hold the advantage. Led by Kate Gosson, Marcellus pushed into a 7-6 lead by halftime. For the rest of the game, any time Skaneateles would surge, the Mustangs would answer. All told, Gosson would have four goals and four assists, offering help to Nora Barry, Leea Sinay and Kelly Welch, each of whom scored twice. Denise Johns had a goal and two assists, with Meghan Connors also scoring and Stephanie O’Rourke getting an assist. In defeat, the Lakers’ Lindsay Angelillo led her side with five goals, but the Mustangs’ defense, led by Erin Rohe, Kelsey Madden and Caitrin Hickey, did a superb job on the other Laker stars, holding Katherine Pille to one goal and Maddy Morrissey to just two assists.
