All is in place for the West Genesee girls lacrosse team as it will take to the field Tuesday night against Baldwinsville, the only team it has lost to in the last three seasons. It’s a match-up of the state’s two top-ranked Class A teams. In the last major hurdle to that showdown, the Wildcats went to Fayetteville-Manlius last Thursday night and, powered by a tough and consistent defense, earned a 12-4 victory over the Hornets. Having already beaten F-M back on April 7, WG knew that the Hornets would provide a stern athletic and physical challenge. Sure enough, the first half proved to be a grind, as the Wildcats had to work hard to build a 5-2 advantage, forced to stay patient and wait for the right times to attack. That would come with more frequency in the second half, but just as important was the way WG’s back line played all game long. Laura Luchessi, Jessica Shanley, Linsday Vona and the rest of the defense frustrated F-M as Nicole Greco picked up nine saves. Meanwhile, Maria DiFato and Bre Hudgins each finished with three goals, as DiFato added two assists. Morgan Corso and Sarah Brown each scored twice as Kellyn Savage and Katey Hart earned one goal apiece. Lauren Michaels and Karlyn Tupper earned assists, too. Two nights earlier, on Senior Night, the Wildcats had no trouble with Rome Free Academy, beating the Black Knights 20-4. Many different players got involved as WG roared to a 13-2 halftime edge. DiFato and Hart, each with four assists, served as an anchor, with Brown and Michaels each leading the way with three-goal hat tricks. Tupper backed up her pair of goals with two assists as Savage, Mara Guy and Bridget Alberts earned two goals apiece. Mel Murphy had a goal and two assists, with DiFato, Hudgins, Corso, Liz Powell and Chelsea Kuss also scoring.
