The Skaneateles boys lacrosse team continued to gain momentum through a pair of home victories as the regular season neared its end. Leading most of the way, the Lakers outscored Homer in each of the first three periods last Tuesday night on its way to a 12-8 victory over the Trojans. Skaneateles held Homer to a single goal in the first quarter, then quickened the pace before halftime with five goals in the second period to gain a 7-3 halftime edge. Continuing to expand its margin, the Lakers took an 11-5 lead to the final period before the Trojans made a belated comeback attempt. Kevin Rice, with three goals and three assists, led the way as Kyle Baier and Tom Schoener each earned three-goal hat tricks, too. Kelly Donigan had two goals and one assist, with Kevin Castle also scoring. Aaron Darr was the only Homer player to score three times as Laker goalie Cal Winkleman recorded 10 saves. Westhill would give the Lakers another serious home test on Thursday night, leading at halftime before a first-rate defensive effort helped the hosts beat the Warriors 9-4. Forced into a slow pace early on, Skaneateles had to be patient, and Westhill’s Dan Eipp got two goals and an assist to help his side push in front, 4-3, before the break. From there, though, Kyle McQuiggan, Lex Johnson, Lucas Sherman and the Skaneateles back line took over, never letting Westhill score again. Any time a shot did go off, Winkleman stopped it, as he finished with 13 saves. Castle and Rice each had two goals and one assist to lead a balanced Laker offense where Schoener, Donigan and Dylan Ross matched each other with one goal and one assist. Jeff Higman and Zach Brownlee scored, too. Having improved to 14-1, Skaneateles visited Cazenovia on Tuesday before taking on Jordan-Elbridge Thursday in the regular-season finale.
