Still unbeaten as the week got underway, the Baldwinsville boys tennis team would get its ultimate examination during last Thursday’s visit to Fayetteville-Manlius, who hadn’t lost a match since 1997. And the Bees would give the Hornets a fight on several fronts, though it couldn’t prevent F-M from beating them 6-1. Dan Kot earned the point, in third singles, beating Eric Rosenthal in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. Shaun Devlin and Josh Katz took Mark Hamidi and Alex Martin to a third-set tie-breaker, but lost 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (7-5). Alessandro Nieves and Grady Schmidt took a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) loss to Daniel Jee and Michael Kaplan. The lead-ups began with the Bees facing Central Square last Monday afternoon and fighting past the Red Hawks 6-1. In a singles sweep, Matt Funicello beat Brandon Payne 6-0, 6-3. Tom Hamm handled Will Galbraith 6-1, 6-0, while Kot earned a 6-0, 6-1 win over Chris Nichols. B’ville’s doubles teams of Nieves-Schmidt, Kevin Thompson-Shawn Sullivan and Kevin Pregent-Devlin all won in straight sets. Though close to a shutout, Ben Weiss and Katz took a 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 loss to Josh Horn and Justin Parow. Up against Utica Proctor on Wednesday afteroon, the Bees won over the Raiders by that same 6-1 margin. Hamm preserved the singles sweep, needing three sets to beat Dave Butler 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 6-3. Funicello and Katz also played singles, dropping just three games between them. Doing double duty, Hamm teamed with Dan Kot to beat Lucas Walker and Mateusz Wozny 6-2, 6-2, as the teams of Nieves-Schmidt and Thompson-Devlin also prevailed in two sets.
