Given little choice in the matter, the Liverpool girls lacrosse team knew it had to start finding wins in a hurry, or risk being left out of the post-season.And in a span of 48 hours, the Warriors got two big ones. So the Warriors went to Fayetteville-Manlius last Tuesday night and, carried by the trio of Jennifer VanderMeulen, Marybeth Madia and Mikey Meagher, beat the Hornets 10-7. Throughout the first half, VanderMeulen and Madia found their way through F-M’s defense and put shots in the net, as Liverpool doubled F-M’s output and seized an 8-4 lead. Since the Warriors cooled off in the second half, the Warriors’ defense had to step up. And it did, as Marlee Heintz, Kelley Yaworsky, Laura Sammon and Madison Buckley all made stops and, when that didn’t work, Meagher excelled with 15 saves. On the offensive end, VanderMeuelen had four goals, with Madia finding the net three times and adding an assist. Kathleen Conese had two goals and one assist, with Kristen Zylka getting the other goal. Two nights later, the Warriors went to Bragman Stadium to face Cicero-North Syracuse, a mere 12 days after losing to them 13-11 at Solvay. The rematch proved quite different, as a combination of early aggression and superb work in goal from Meagher beat the Northstars 12-7. Never trailing, Liverpool seized a 2-0 lead when Madia and VanderMeulen scored in the first six minutes. Then, with the score 2-1, Madia and Conese scored nine seconds apart, making it 4-1 and forcing CNS to use a timeout. That didn’t keep the Warriors from stretching out the margin to four at 5-1. Conese halted a possible comeback when she converted 8.2 seconds before halftime, making it 8-4 at the break. Nina Tassone and Zylka joined the fun, scoring 23 seconds apart early in the second half to build the margin to 10-4, and that would prove enough. Even with CNS staging a continual series of attacks, Meagher kept shutting them off, not stopping until she had 19 saves on the night.
