Combine the mighty bat of Mike Mascari with the strong pitching of Pat Lemmo, and the Westhill baseball team is difficult for anyone to beat — even an opponent that is 12-0. The Warriors handed its neighbor and rival, Bishop Ludden, its first defeat of the season Sunday afternoon at Alliance Bank Stadium in a 9-2 decision that capped off the second annual ALS All-Star Baseball Classic. Mascari stole the spotlight by hitting for the cycle — a single, double, triple and home run, all within a span of six innings. The triple came in the bottom of the first inning — and while it didn’t lead to any runs, it set the stage for what was to follow. Ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the third, Mascari got to Ludden pitcher James Murray for a single, then watched as Mike DeCarr lofted a home run over the left-field fence, making it 3-0 and ending Murray’s day on the mound. Ludden’s only big threat came in the top of the fourth. With runners on second and third and two out, Ryan O’Kane singled home a run, but Dan Karleski, from right field, threw out Dan Fadden trying to make it 3-2. Instead, it remained 3-1 — but not for long. Matt Pirro, fresh off a six-inning stint against Skaneateles three days earlier, relieved Murray, but quickly put two runners on base with one out. Now Mascari returned and delivered the biggest blow of all, crushing a drive over the tent that sits beyond the right-field fence at Alliance Bank Stadium. The three-run home run made it 6-1 and, essentially, ended the drama. All that was left was for Mascari to come to the plate and, in the bottom of the sixth, hit an RBI double to the left-field wall to complete his cycle. While all this was going on, Lemmo threw a complete game that included seven strikeouts. All he allowed was that fourth-inning tally, plus John Rooney’s solo home run in the sixth.
