In a duel between long-time Tri-Valley League rivals, the Oneida softball team took charge last Tuesday against Vernon Verona Sherrill, beating the Red Devils 10-3. Wasting little time, the Indians got three runs off VVS pitcher Stephanie Siriano in the bottom of the first inning, then got five runs in the third inning to make it 8-0. That was all Beth Kann would need, as she went five innings for the win and struck out eight along the way. Erika Williams paced Oneida at the plate with two hits and four RBIs. And the Indians didn’t stop there, either, moving on to an even better pitching performance in Friday’s 3-0 win over the Whitesboro. Before she was done, Kann had accumulated 15 strikeouts, surrendering just three hits along the way and striking out the side three times. The Warriors only threatened when it got two on with nobody out in the top of the second, but couldn’t bring them home. Two of Oneida’s runs came in the third inning, as Kann’s groundout brought home Jamie Delgenio and Kara Peck’s infield hit scored Jenn Rogeux. Two innings later, Peck’s single up the middle brought home an insurance run. Oneida improved to 5-1 on the season. The Indians continued to roll during Saturday’s South Lewis Tournament, claiming the first-place trophy on a hot and humid afternoon. First, Oneida beat the host Falcons 3-0, setting up a classic final against Rome Free Academy where Kann threw a no-hitter to beat the Black Knights 1-0 in nine innings. Much of the game proved to be a duel between Kann and RFA’s Amelia Casalenuevo, each of whom went eight innings without allowing a run. Finally, in the top of the ninth, Oneida broke through as Williams ran home with the game’s lone run. The no-hitter concluded a day where, in 15 inning pitched, Kann struck out 20 and easily earned tournament MVP honors. VVS, meanwhile, ran into defending Section III Class D champion Stockbridge Valley and took a 5-0 defeat, only getting three hits off Stockbridge ace Cheyenne Bumpus.
