Everywhere one looked during last Friday’s Ryan Wells Memorial Madison County Championships at Canastota High School, the Cazenovia girls track and field team was racking up points. In the end, the Lakers had 221 points, more than enough to prevail in the 28th edition of this spring classic as the host Raiders took second with 138 points. Oneida (114 points) was in third place. Paige Biviano won three times for the Lakers’ cause. She dominated the 100-meter high hurdles with a time of 16.8 seconds, then went 15 feet 7 inches in the long jump and threw the javelin 72 feet 1 inch for yet another title. Audrey Bowers ruled in the sprints. She won the 100-meter dash in 13.8 seconds and took the 200-meter dash in 27.9 seconds, both times holding off Morrisville-Eaton’s Emily Sherwood. Also, Bowers helped Cazenovia’s 4×100 relay team prevail in 54.7 seconds, along with Katie Woodworth, who was third in both the 100 and 200 behind Bowers. Bowers got third place in the long jump (14 feet) behind Biviano. Meghen Liddell rolled to victory in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 8:37.3 and also got second place in the 400 hurdles in 1:16.6. Rae Toby ran to second in the 3,000-meter run (12:39.2), watching as Canastota’s Allison Lasnicki (10:39.3) set a meet record. Holly Marcelle joined in, beating the field in the 800-meter run with a clocking of 2:32.5 and also finishing third (5:28.1) at 1,500 meters. Meghen Morrow was third in the 100 hurdles in 19.1 seconds, and the Lakers got second in the 4×400 (4:33.6), 4×800 (11:35.5) and 4×1,600 (26:47.7) relays. As a cap to this big day, Laura Fitch dominated the five-event pentathlon, earning 1,323 points as her teammate, Patrice Gonzalez, took second with 589 points.Also, Piper Gianforte earned a win in the pole vault when she cleared 8 feet. The Cazenovia boys team also competed in the Madison County meet and earned 70 points for fourth place. The host Raiders, with 201 points, edged Oneida (185 points) for the top spot. Tim Wheeler set a meet record in the javelin, throwing it 140 feet 9 inches, while Joe Bono unleashed a throw of 141 feet 4 inches to win the discus. Pat Dermody stepped up to finish second in the 3,200-meter run in 10:29.4, while Dan Wightman needed 2:08.1 to finish third in the 800-meter run. Eric Goldman was second in the long jump (18 feet 5 1/4 inches) as Alex Petroff cleared 10 feet 6 inches for third place in the pole vault.
