Returning to local action, the Westhill baseball team twice got major scares last weekend, but still managed to win by a single run. When it came to last Friday’s game against Marcellus, the Warriors were way ahead, but nearly blew it before edging past the Mustangs 10-9. It was 2-2 when, in the bottom of the second inning, Westhill scored a run. The real damage, though, came an inning later when Westhill plated seven runs. Refusing to surrender, Marcellus, who had 15 hits to the Warriors’ 11, used four runs in the fourth inning and three runs in the top of the fifth to pull within one. It took pitcher Mike DeCarr, working in relief of Ryan Malley and Kevin McAvoy, to nail down the last outs for the save. Mike McMullen led Westhill’s attack with a triple, double and three RBIs. Dan Karleski drove in two runs, while DeCarr, David Grace and Greg Schmidt drove in one run apiece. Saturday’s trip to Hannibal provided even more excitement, as a late rally allowed Westhill to prevail in this battle of Warrior teams by a 4-3 margin. Here, Westhill trailed 1-0 before a pair of third-inning runs put them in front 2-1. Hannibal immediately tied it, though, and put across a run in the bottom of the sixth to go ahead 3-2, three outs from a huge win. Westhill never let it get that far, tying it in the top of the seventh, then getting the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, all as DeCarr went the full eight innings on the mound to get the win. Jake Rush had two RBIs, with DeCarr also driving in a run and Mascari earning a double. Ryan Sweeting led Hannibal with three RBIs.
