In the face of all kinds of star performances, the Skaneateles girls track and field team could only manage a split of last Thursday’s battle with Christian Brothers Academy and Homer. The Lakers had little trouble beating the Trojans 81-59, but could not keep up with the Brothers, losing by a similar 81.5-59.5 margin. Despite the loss, Sknaeateles dominated the field events. Gabby Eckles won three times by herself, clearing 8 feet in the pole vault, then unleashing a top triple jump of 30 feet 2 1/2 inches and also winning the high jump as she cleared 4 feet 8 inches. Beatrice Walton took over in the throwing events, tossing the shot put 30 feet 6 inches and the discus 81 feet 9 inches. Skaneateles got just one win on the oval as Grace Vanderven took the 800-meter run in 2:26.4. CBA’s Melissa Zajdel led her side to a sweep, as the Princeton University-bound senior won all three sprints. Zajdel took the 100-meter dash (12.7 seconds), 200-meter dash (26.8 seconds) and 400-meter dash (1:01.6), and also combined with Katie Brislin, Rachel Zajdel and Carol Giblin to win the 4×800 relay in 10:13.2.
