Since it’s rare for any baseball team to stay unbeaten for any length of time, the Bishop Ludden Gaelic Knights wanted to hold on to that feeling for as long as possible. The string nearly broke during last Tuesday’s home game against Hannibal, but Ludden came back and made it six wins in a row, edging past the Warriors 7-6. Getting into early trouble, Gaelic Knights pitcher James Murray surrendered five total runs in the second and third innings as Hannibal went in front 5-2. An exchange of tallies put the game at 6-3 going to the bottom of the fifth. There, Ludden fought back, tagging Warrior reliever Curtis Cannova for four runs to go out in front, most of them coming home when Chris Davis crushed a home run. When Murray exited, John Rooney took over on the mound and held Hannibal scoreless the rest of the way to pick up the save. Even as it got colder for Wednesday’s game at Cazenovia, the Gaelic Knights’ bats warmed up during a 21-5 romp over the Lakers. Down 1-0 going into the top of the second, Ludden changed that with an eight-run rally that chased Cazenovia starter Max Kellish from the mound. A five-run third inning followed, as the Gaelic Knights eventually produced 20 hits and took full advantage of seven Laker errors. Davis again went deep for a home run, finishing with three RBIs. Murray, Dan Fadden, Dan Paris and Ryan O’Kane (the winning pitcher) each drove in two runs, while Rooney, DeMaio and Corey Hunter also drove in runs.
