Twice in a span of four days, the Christian Brothers Academy and Jamesville-DeWitt track and field teams went to meets and often found their way to the top. First, at the Tully Girls Spring Break Invitational, CBA broke a school record in the distance medley relay as Katie Brislin, Melissa Zajdel, Carol Giblin and Ashley Lettney put up a time of 4:19.6. Zajdel, on her own, won the 200-meter dash in 25.4 seconds, and was second in the 100-meter dash (12.6 seconds) as Jamesville-DeWitt’s Marae Tearney finished third in 12.9 seconds. Michaela Gildemeyer gave the Brothers a third-place finish in the 1,500-meter run (5:18.7) and was fourth (2:31.0) in the 800-meter run. Natalie Sportelli worked in the pentathlon and took second place with 1,830 points behind Tully’s Mallory Brunet (2,025 points). J-D got fourth in the 4×400 relay (4:27.9), with Marissa Colavecchio third in the pole vault, clearing 8 feet 6 inches. Maggie Fuller took third in the high jump (4 feet 10 inches) and Tearney took fourth in the long jump. Grace Bradshaw (31 feet 3 inches) and Amanda Tan (30 feet 6 1/2 inches) were fourth and fifth, respectively, in the triple jump. Shayla Graham was fifth in the discus as she tossed it 81 feet 6 inches. Both teams moved on to Saturday’s Jordan-Elbridge Invitational, where more success could be found. From CBA’s side, Zajdel set two track records, zooming to first place in the 100 in 12.3 seconds and claiming the 200 in 25.5 seconds. To complete her sprint sweep, Zajdel broke the one-minute mark in the 400-meter dash, winning in 58.9 seconds. Brislin won the 3,o00-meter run in 10:38.4, Quigley earned third place in the 400 hurdles in 1:14.9, as Giblin landed in third place at 800 meters in 2:25.8 and Rachel Zajdel took fourth (5:11.7) at 1,500 meters. Brislin, Michaela Gildemeyer, Ashley Lettney and Rachel Zajdel took third in the 4×800 relay in 10:15.3. J-D had success on both sides, including Bumkuth Jiak winning twice. He took the 800-meter dash in 1:58 flat, the only man in the field to break two minutes, and he also took the boys mile in a time of 4:40.2. David Salbert won the triple jump, going 42 feet 8 inches. Ira Griffin won the 200-meter dash in 23.32 seconds.From a relay standpoint, J-D emerged with a victory in the 4×800 relay, recording a time of 8:39.4 to beat Canastota by more than eight seconds. Dan Driscoll finished fifth in the 3,200-meter run in 10:29.4. Salbert helped the Rams’ 4×100 relay team take second in 44.9 seconds. Eric Semmel was third in the 110 high hurdles in 16.2 seconds. In field events, Peter Anderson was fourth in the discus (107 feet 4 inches), while Curtis Walker took fourth in the long jump and Tim Kendrick was fifth in the triple jump behind Salbert. On the girls side, J-D was second in the 4×400 relay in a time of 4:21.5. Tearney took third in the 100 in 12.9 seconds, while Eileen Cody finished fifth in the 1,500 in 5:12.6. Graham threw the discus 83 feet 3 inches for fourth place as Katy Pieri took fifth in the triple jump. Fuller again cleared 4 feet 10 inches for fifth in the triple jump.
