Given that the Cazenovia girls lacrosse team played just one game in an 11-day stretch from April 9 to 20, some players left town during the spring break. The only problem was that the remaining Lakers had to go up against Westhill, the state’s no. 6-ranked Class C team, on Friday afternoon. And the Warriors proved to have too much, handing Cazenovia an 18-11 defeat. Even with the graduation of Laura Zimmerman (who will precede Kara Cannizzaro to North Carolina) and a new coach in Theresa Masse, Westhill had a strong and deep roster, which would be on display here. That didn’t happen right away, though. With Kendra Volz scoring twice and Cannizaro, Gabby Jaquith and Julie Gregg also converting, Cazenovia gained a 5-2 lead midway through the first half, forcing the Warriors into a time-out. And that time-out would work, for Westhill turned it around, outscoring Cazenovia 8-2 the rest of the first half as freshman Brenna Rainone, with three goals and two assists, led the way. For a good portion of the second half, the Lakers hung close, and Jaquith had much to do it. On her way to six goals for the day, the sophomore kept Westhill uncomfortable, and her goal with 15:36 left cut the deficit to 11-9. Moments later, Mackenzie Rainone got a yellow card, and Cazenovia had a one-player advantage for three minutes. However, Westhill dominated that time span, scoring twice to ignite a run of seven unanswered goals that settled the outcome. Brenna Rainone enjoyed the best game of her varsity career at the Lakers’ expense, finishing with six goals and four assists as Annie O’Connor (four goals) and Emily Haggerty (three goals) backed her up. The whole roster would be back in time for Monday’s game against Marcellus at the Fenner complex that starts a week-long homestand. Cazenovia faces Tully on Thursday and LaFayette on Saturday.
