Amid a busy spring break, the West Genesee and Bishop Ludden softball teams met each other, and the two neighbors engaged in a great battle that ended with the Wildcats holding off the Gaelic Knights 5-4. WG gave its starting pitcher, Ashley Amidon, a pair of early runs, and for a long time that held up as she blanked Ludden over the first five innings. Staying patient, the Gaelic Knights broke through in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three times to grab a 3-2 lead, needing just three more outs to win. Before Ludden got those outs, though, WG pounded out three runs of its own in the top of the seventh off Grace Rooney, who had relieved starting pitcher Mary Morgan. Ludden’s single run in the bottom of that frame did not keep Wildcat reliever Gabby Lustrinelli from getting the final out. Lustrinelli and Deanna Apps each had one RBI for the Wildcats, who had just six hits to the Gaelic Knights’ eight. Rooney tripled and drove in a run for Ludden as teammate Cate Graf got two RBis and Kayla Kibling also earned an RBI.
