One bad inning cost the Fayetteville-Manlius baseball team when it finally got out on the field to start the 2009 season. The Hornets had to wait until last Saturday to play as games against Liverpool, Baldwinsville and Rome Free Academy all got postponed in the early days of April. When it cleared up — and dried up — F-M would debut on the road against two-time defending Section III Class AA champion Utica Proctor, who didn’t prove kind as it handed the Hornets an 11-0 defeat. Already with wins over B’ville and Cicero-North Syracuse on the board, the Raiders earned a first-inning run off F-M pitcher Ryan Brown, but saved its real damage for the bottom of the third. In that single fame, Proctor put up nine runs, a combination of big hits and defensive mistakes on the Hornets’ part that quickly got out of hand. Jeremy Stone would replace Brown on the mound and fare quite well in relief, but the Raiders were out of reach. Meanwhile, F-M managed just four hits off Proctor pitcher Ryan Donovan, who recorded seven strikeouts. At the plate, Mike Scotellaro and Adam Dee led Proctor with two RBIs apiece. Bishop Grimes also opened its season on Saturday, going to Oneida and taking a 12-2 loss to the Indians. David Campese pitched and never made it past the third inning as Oneida got all of its runs in the first four frames. Despite a solid relief stint from Zac Sutherland, Grimes would not catch up. John Smith and Tim Scanlon would each get one RBI on the Cobras’ behalf. For the Indians, Justin Didio doubled, tripled and drove in three runs.
