Despite all the early-week snow, local boys lacrosse teams hit the field, hoping to generate some momentum before the warmer weather and the April break. Westhill, at 2-0, appeared headed for three wins in a row against Cazenovia last Tuesday night, only to surrender that edge in a 10-9 overtime loss to the Lakers. Dylan Tripodi seemed right at home in the snow, pounding out five goals and one assist as Westhill, up 3-1 after one period, kept that lead through the game’s middle stages. Dan Eipp supplied the help, earning five assists. However, the Warriors’ defense bent just enough to allow Cazenovia, playing its opening game of the 2009 season, to get even at 9-9, then win in the OT period. Kyle Nicholas finished with two goals as Tris Nicola and Alex Lesins also converted and Tim Burgess got one assist. Mark McAnaney, playing in the net, had 12 saves. Justin Hoffman led a more balanced Cazenovia offense with a three-goal hat trick. Tough as this was to take, it only seemed to motivate the Warriors for Thursday’s visit to Marcellus, as it took the Mustangs apart in a 13-4 romp. Already ahead 2-1 after one period, Westhill took charge in the second quarter, blanking Marcellus and putting together four unanswered goals. Whatever Marcellus tried to respond, it proved too late. Burgess, with four goals, led the way as Nicholas pieced together a three-goal hat trick and Eipp earned four assists. Tripodi, Lesins and John Zimmerman each had two goals and one assist, while Nicola earned one goal and one assist. McAnaney was superb in the net, stopping 13 of the 17 shots he faced. Back on Tuesday, Bishop Ludden ran right into LaFayette at the Clary Road field and took a 17-7 loss to the Lancers. Owners of the no. 3 ranking in the first state Class C poll of the season, LaFayette took a 5-2 first-quarter advantage, then flattened the Gaelic Knights with seven unanswered goals in the second period. Brad Kirch gave Ludden some late production, earning four goals, as Colin Lynch added two goals and one assist. Dave Pierce had one goal and one assist as Sean Conners added two assists. Miles Thompson, who transferred from Salmon River to LaFayette this year, led his side with six goals and three assists.
