Mired with an early 0-2 mark, the East Syracuse-Minoa boys lacrosse team knew it had to get moving, and soon, before things got worse. Thus, what the Spartans did at Chittenango last Tuesday night had to prove refreshing, as a quick start led to an 11-2 rout of the Bears. Wanting to get its work done early, ESM sprinted out to a 6-1 first-quarter edge, ignoring the cold, winter-like conditions. By halftime, the margin was 9-1, and would remain large the rest of the way. Mike Quadear put in four goals, adding an assist. Garrett Smith had two goals and one assist, with Mike Cummings adding a goal and two assists. Close behind them, Tom Petterelli and Marc Sacco each got one goal and one assist. Andrew Raymond and James Landry also took turns getting goals. In the girls game between ESM and Chittenango, a fierce second-half comeback allowed the Spartans to win by a score of 7-6. Both teams had a difficult time in the snow, but ESM took longer to get on track, trailing the Bears 5-3 at halftime. But when ESM’s defense stiffened, only allowing one goal in the last 25 minutes, it got time to tie it, 6-6, then go in front for good when Allyson Rossi converted with 5:07 left in regulation. Rossi, Gina Campese and Carissa Ficarro each had two goals, with Marlee Vlassis getting the other goal. Katie Cook piled up 14 saves, and her teammates shut down the Bears in the second half, also doing a strong job possessing the ball over the game’s final five minutes.
