In advance of a big showdown with West Genesee late this week, the Fayetteville-Manlius boys lacrosse team tuned up with another one-sided win. Having flattened Union-Endicott on March 28, the Hornets went to Rome Free Academy last Saturday and toyed with the Black Knights in a 15-3 decision. Ignoring all the rain and wind and chilly temperatures, F-M put up six unanswered goals in the first quarter and didn’t let up until it had an 11-2 advantage at the half. Both Justin DePalma and Matt Taylor finished with four goals, with DePalma adding three points for a career-best seven points. Mike Poppleton found the net twice as Jake Cooper, Tim Beach, Will Reznikov, Chris Walsh and Andrew Murphy each had one goal. Mike O’Neil picked up two assists as Glen Trachtenberg also gained an assist. As this happened, F-M’s girls team, bouncing back from a loss to Baldwinsville two days before, claimed its first win of the season, crushing RFA 19-4. Despite all the chill, the Hornets got plenty of chances to attack early, and converted often enough to gain an 11-2 advantage by halftime. Not letting up in the late stages, F-M saw Morgan Axenfeld score four times to lead a deep, diverse offense. Sarah Lux had three goals, with Mary Hartzheim and Kelly Perry each scoring twice. Marilyn Farrell backed up her single goal with three assists as Mollie Caputo, Taylor Robinson, Alex Murphy, Jayne Conahan, Katie Sipple, Meg Wilson and Morgan Same all scored, too. On Tuesday night, F-M goes to Camillus and took its first shot at West Genesee, the two-time state Class A champions who possess a 51-game win streak.
