Taking one last trip to Manley Field House, Marcellus boys indoor track stars Mike Quercia and Chris Stogsdill both found success during last Friday night’s state qualifying meet. Quercia earned two different spots in this Saturday’s state championships at Cornell University, in the 600 and 300-meter sprints. In the 600, Quercia proved unstoppable. He ran away from Corcoran’s Trenton Sparks and finished in 1:20.52, beating Sparks by 2.41 seconds to win. Over in the 300, Quercia stayed right with Henninger’s Greg Spears. Though Spears won in 36.04 seconds, Quercia’s second-place clocking of 36.31 seconds easily beat the state qualifying standard of 36.84 seconds. Meanwhile, Stogsdill got involved in a great 1,000-meter duel with Fayetteville-Manlius star Alex Hatz. Stogsdill finished in 2:27.83, well clear of the qualifying standard, but Hatz won in 2:26.44 to break a Section III record that had stood for 34 years. Jesse Garn also did quite well, finishing fourth in the 3,200-meter run in 9:52.74 as Sean Curry (Bishop Ludden) won in 9:24.38.
