Working on opposite ends of the Section III Class A playoff bracket, the East Syracuse-Minoa and Jamesville-DeWitt girls volleyball teams each made it through last Tuesday night’s opening round of the Section III Class A playoffs in four-game verdicts. In the case of the no. 8 seed Spartans, it met no. 9 seed Oneida, where it won the first game 25-15 and dropped the second game 25-18. Shaking that off, ESM won the third game 25-17, then held on in the fourth game 25-21 to keep its season alive. Andee Fox had 12 kills, with Mallory Martino adding six kills and Kara LaBarge gaining three kills and five blocks. KellyMarkert added three kills. Brittany Siechen augmented her 22 assists (which put her past 400 for the season) with five aces and four kills. Oneida, in defeat, saw Rachel Kline get 28 kills and eight blocks, with Shannon Dowling adding 27 assists. J-D, the no. 11 seed, visited no. 6 seed Whitesboro. The Red Rams lost the first game to the Warriors 25-20, but seemed to earn every important point in the next three games, winning them all by equal 25-23 margins. Ally Chaiken put up 24 assists, feeding a balanced front line. Meredith Howe had eight kills, while Ally Loewy got seven kills. Sophie Kiggins backed up her six kills with five aces and three assists, while Taylor Bierwagon also got six kills. ESM has to face top seed New Hartford in Friday night’s quarterfinal round, while J-D confronts no. 3 seed Fulton, a team it lost to twice in the regular season.
