Solvay High School was the center of action on Saturday as 15 teams gathered for the annual Onondaga High School League Liberty/Patriot championship meet. The host Bearcats finished fifth in that field, with 132 points, while Jordan-Elbridge fit into sixth place with 102 points. Hannibal won with 214 points as Cato-Meridian (170 points) edged Cazenovia (168.5 points) for the runner-up spot. A trio of Solvay wrestlers won in their respective weight classes. J.T. Romagnoli, at 103 pounds, edged Onondaga’s Anna Cummings 2-1 in their title match. Tom Bradley won the 215-pound final by pinning Ross Bolewski (Marcellus) in the final seconds, while Aaron Benedict prevailed at 130 pounds, beating Jacob Valentino (Skaneateles) in a 7-1 decision. J-E also had three wrestlers in finals, but none of them could prevail. Mitch Alpha, at 96 pounds, fell to Brad Nardella (Cazenovia) 6-2, while Preston Bishop (119 pounds) took a third-period pin against Port Byron’s Mitch Janes and Bryan Murray (285 pounds) fell to Cato-Meridian star Austin Lee 7-3. Solvay teammates Riley Delaney (96 pounds) and Tyler Avery (135 pounds) each had fourth-place efforts, with Tom Sansone fifth at 285 pounds. Peter Buczakowski (140 pounds) and Zach Anderson (145 pounds) had sixth-place outings. For the Eagles, Mike Nguyen secured third place at 112 pounds by beating Cazenovia’s Jose Wells 7-4 in the consolation final, while Colin Ennulat (103 pounds) took fifth place. Bishop Ludden’s Conor Cosgrove was fourth in the 215-pound division where Bradley won. Due to its combined enrollment with Westhill, Solvay is going to Saturday’s Section III Class AA meet at Cicero-North Syracuse, while J-E goes to the Class B meet at South Jefferson. Top finishers advance to the Feb. 21-22 overall sectional championships at Utica Memorial Auditorium.
