From the sidelines to the court, the Jamesville-DeWitt boys basketball team had a special Senior Night on so many different levels. That the Red Rams would win its 37th consecutive game against Chittenango on Friday was widely anticipated, and on that front J-D succeeded by crushing the Bears 107-55. With that victory, head coach Bob McKenney reached 400 career wins, the section Section III coach to do so this season, after Bishop Ludden’s Pat Donnelly — and just before Tom Blackford hit that mark at Fayetteville-Manlius. McKenney began his coaching career in Milton, Vt., where his teams went 145-99. At J-D, the mark has included 255 wins, a .836 win percentage and two state Class A championships, in 2004 and 2008, with a great chance at a third this winter. And McKenney has done all this while serving as Onondaga Community College’s athletic director. Much as the spotlight belonged to McKenney on this night, J-D’s players — both familiar and brand-new — gave the fans plenty to be delighted about. Brandon Triche, in his last regular-season home appearance, hit on everything from 3-pointers to powerful dunks on his way to 30 points, all part of a J-D squad that had 38 points in the first quarter and a 61-22 edge by halftime. Another senior, Alshwan Hymes, gained 13 points, while fellow seniors Steve Thompson, Mychal Weekes, John Sheedy and Jon Lee each scored at least one field goal and saw lots of court time. DaJuan Coleman had 14 points. The real treat, though, was seeing Nathan Scholl-Hess in uniform. Since eighth grade, Scholl-Hess has served as a J-D team manager, and as a reward for all his faithful service at games and practices, McKenney put Scholl-Hess in uniform on this night, which was neat enough. To make it perfect, though, Scholl-Hess took to the court — and sank a pair of 3-point shots, one in each half, evoking the loudest roars of the night. After all this, J-D would meet Fowler (a team that almost beat the Red Rams on Jan. 9) on Tuesday before Friday’s trip to Buddy Wleklinski Court to face Christian Brothers Academy. Due to the expected crowds, only those with pre-sale tickets will get in to see the girls/boys doubleheader, which tips off at 6 p.m.
