How fitting, perhaps, that the Bishop Grimes girls basketball team locked up another OHSL Patriot Division regular-season championship at Pulaski’s expense. The Cobras’ 57-32 win over the Blue Devils in Pulaski Tuesday night was the team’s 14th win in a row and its 20th overall league title, coming against a squad that, in years past, has given Grimes all kinds of problems. Trying to put it away early, Grimes could not do so in a physical first half where both teams got whistled for fouls often. Without the rebounding from Amanda Marcely and Erannan Shattuck, the Cobras might have found some trouble. Instead, Grimes led 25-16 at halftime, and started to get away in the third period with Marcely at the controls. Time and again, the Cobras’ forward moved inside and converted, setting a new career mark with 28 points, 19 of them after the break. All by herself, Marcely came close to matching Pulaski’s entire output, which allowed for modest contributions from the rest of the roster. Brooke Bonacci had seven points, while Amelia Heiselman and Tenley Pitonzo each got five points. Two nights later, Grimes was back home, honoring Bonacci and Potanzo on Senior Night as the Cobras took on Onondaga.
