Even though the Jamesville-DeWitt girls basketball team is unlikely to catch Christian Brothers Academy atop the OHSL Freedom division, it did manage to steal the headlines from the Brothers for at least one night. J-D went on the road Friday, to Mexico, and rendered a severe blow to the Tigers’ league title hopes by rallying to earn a 55-50 victory to improve its own mark to 10-6. Mexico had, in the week leading up to this game, lost to CBA on Jan. 23 and had dropped a hard-luck decision to Cicero-North Syracuse last Tuesday night, the game decided by a questionable foul in the last second of regulation that led to Marybeth Egan’s winning free throws. Having not played in that time, J-D was refreshed as it made the trip north, so it didn’t panic, even when the Tigers zoomed out to a 17-7 first-quarter lead. Over the course of the next two periods, J-D found an offensive groove and slowly ate into Mexico’s advantage, not stopping until it had caught up, 38-38, at the end of the third period. In the fourth quarter, the Rams assumed the lead, then held on behind clutch free-throw shooting. Alyssa Gratien finished with 15 points, seven of them from successful foul shots. Jessica Kramer was close behind Gratien, earning 13 point. Kramer and Gratien both hit on a pair of 3-pointers. Theresa Hernandez finished with 10 points, while Molly Maroney stepped in with eight points. Mexico lost despite 20 points from Evie Josbena and 11 points from Angie Josbena. Meanwhile, at Buddy Wleklinski Court, CBA was overwhelming Cortland with lots of offense on its way to a 71-46 win over the Purple Tigers. In each of the first two periods, the Brothers doubled Cortland’s production, leading to a 34-17 advantage. Though the Purple Tigers held up the train for a while, CBA closed on a 20-10 run, just to be sure. Leanne Ockenden had 21 points, four times hitting on 3-pointers. Michelel Damico had 12 points, with Kayla Stroman (11 points) close behind. Katie Webster picked up nine points and Victoria Johnson added eight points. Cortland’s Courtney Tennant led her side with 15 points. As they await one more regular-season clash on Feb. 13, CBA and J-D both have tests this week, as the Brothers met Chittenango Tuesday and the Red Rams went to Cortland before its own meeting with the Bears on Friday night.
