During a weekend stretch, the Fayetteville-Manlius boys basketball team played twice in a span of 24 hours, and won on both occasions to improve to 10-4 on the season. The fun started in last Friday night’ game at Oswego, where Brian Zapisek achieved a career milestone during the Hornets’ 76-46 romp of the Buccaneers. Oswego actually hung close in the first half, only trailing by six, 29-23, at halftime. But with Zapisek doing close to everything, F-M dominated the second half and more than doubled the Bucs’ output. By the time he rested in the fourth quarter, Zapisek had his first career triple-double in the books, finishing with 22 points, plus 13 rebounds and 10 assists. Benefiting from this generosity, Erik Meuller put home 19 points, nine of them from free throws, as Mike O’Neil put up 15 points. Jack Giles contributed eight points. In defeat, Eric Schrader led Oswego with 15 points. A night later, F-M was back home in the “Hornets’ Nest”, getting a tougher challenge from Whitesboro, but still beating the Warriors 65-49. Despite arriving with a 12-3 record gained in the deep Tri-Valley League, Whitesboro got cold in the game’s middle stages and never recovered. Starting to get away in the second quarter, the Hornets outscored Whitesboro 18-9, and kept up the momentum well into the second half as the margin grew to 57-33 before the starters rested late. Zapisek hit a trio of 3-pointers on his way to 25 points for the night, while Mueller got 14 points and Giles picked up 10 points. O’Neil cooled off a bit, to seven points. Whitesboro saw Ryan Wells get 18 points and Junior Woodard add 12 points. A big milestone awaits F-M if it can get past East Sryacuse-Minoa and Cicero-North Syracuse early this week. Win those games, and head coach Tom Blackford could be seeking career win no. 400 (most of it done at Hamilton) when the Hornets visit Auburn on Friday night.
