Though it had a temporary respite from the OHSL Liberty division grind, the Skaneateles boys basketball team still had some work to do as January came to a close. The Lakers went to Jordan-Elbridge Friday night and did enough on the offensive side to register a 72-62 victory over the Eagles to reach double digits in the win column. What was a close battle broke open in the second quarter, when Skaneateles outscored J-E 19-10 and gained a 32-21 edge going into halftime. For the rest of the game, every time the Eagles tried to eat into this lead, the Lakers would have an answer. Kevin Rice, with a trio of 3-pointers, and Nick Pesarchick led the way with 17 points apiece. Kyle McQuiggan put up nine points, while Tom Schoener and Brandon Barron each had seven points and Will Polacheck added six points. For J-E, Tom Graf led with 17 points, with Christian Berwind adding 15 points. As this was going on, the Skaneateles girls team took a 42-24 loss to J-E, held to just 10 points in the first three quarters as Jordan Dudden led with seven points. The Lakers fell to 1-13 on the season. Meanwhile, the Skaneateles boys (10-5) could secure a winning record for 2008-09 if it prevailed at Homer Monday night before hosting defending Class B champion Hannibal on Tuesday. The Lakers and Homer meet again on Friday.
